About Us

Detained International provides pro bono legal advocacy to victims of injustice, inequality and other Human Rights violations in the UAE and the wider Middle East.  Detained International – Established in 2018, after personal experiences in the Middle East.  We are a team of dedicated and legal professionals who have experienced the terror of detention in foreign lands. Where language, law and culture are unfamiliar and Human Rights abuses are commonplace.

As a legal advocacy NGO, we specialise in providing pro-bono (free) legal assistance to all in need, whatever the circumstance and regardless of whether the case is newsworthy or not.If Embassies and Consulates and other NGOs are unable or unwilling to assist, we can.  Our specialist area of expertise is Dubai, the wider United Arab Emirates, the Middle East and the developing world.

We provide counselling for victims of Human Rights abuse and support to families.  We manage media, delivering practical help, effective campaigns and multi-jurisdictional legal process to deliver proven results. Liberatio ab Injustitia

Every year Detained International publishes articles, reports and briefings on specific cases of injustice and Human Rights abuse.  The constant media coverage has led to numerous prisoner releases. 

Our Human Rights professionals, lawyers, journalists and academics are from diverse backgrounds and nationalities.  The broad expertise and leverage from success in high profile cases enables us to operate effectively with access to foreign governments, the United Nations, the European Union, other leading Human Rights NGOs and private sector institutions.

Our vision is a United Arab Emirates and wider Middle East where justice, equality and human rights are upheld, protected and promoted in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and where those that act with disregard and contempt for human rights are bought to justice. We are working towards an ambitious goal. We won’t get there overnight, and we can’t make it on our own, but together we will bring about a better world.

What We Do​

Detained International provides pro bono legal advocacy to victims of injustice, inequality and other human rights violations in the UAE and the wider Middle East.

Identify

We identify injustice, inequality and other Human Rights violations in Dubai, the wider United Arab Emirates and the Middle East.

Alert

When we identify injustice, we alert the world’s media and lobby policy makers and national, international and intergovernmental institutions for change.

Assist

We provide pro bono legal advocacy, crisis management and media support to those suffering injustices and their families.

Resolve

We work to resolve individual cases of injustice. And we work with the international community to effect lasting policy reform and change to help prevent future injustice.

How We Do It​

We judge every case on its merits. Some need a softly-softly approach of quite behind the scenes diplomacy, others require us to go straight to the media. Our experience dealing with different cases tells us what’s needed. Among the techniques we use are:
