Middle East / Other

“The Middle East” is a term traditionally applied by western Europeans to the countries of SW Asia and NE Africa lying W of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. Thus defined it includes Cyprus, the Asian part of Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, the countries of the Arabian peninsula (Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait), and Egypt and Libya. The area was viewed as midway between Europe and East Asia

The Middle East has long been subject to unrest and abuses of Human Rights.  It is an extremely volatile region, with both extreme wealth from oil revenues and extreme poverty.  The region has some of the worlds most picturesque coastlines, a diverse animal life, beautiful flora and faunae and human history dating back to the earliest recorded civilisations. Unfortunately, the Middle East has been the scene of political turmoil and major warfare, including World War I, World War II, the Arab-Israeli Wars , the Iran-Iraq War and the Persian Gulf Wars .

Arabs constitute the largest ethnic group in the Middle East, followed by various Iranian peoples and then by Turkic speaking groups (Turkish, Azeris, and Iraqi Turkmen). Native ethnic groups of the region include, in addition to Arabs, Arameans, Assyrians, Baloch, Berbers, Copts, Druze, Greek Cypriots, Jews, Kurds, Lurs, Mandaeans, Persians, Samaritans, Shabaks, Tats, and Zazas. European ethnic groups that form a diaspora in the region include Albanians, Bosniaks, Circassians (including Kabardians), Crimean Tatars, Greeks, Franco-Levantines, Italo-Levantines, and Iraqi Turkmens. Among other migrant populations are Chinese, Filipinos, Indians, Indonesians, Pakistanis, Pashtuns, Romani, and Afro-Arabs.

Thank you for visiting Detained.org.uk.

Our new website is launching soon.

Detained International is a not-for-profit human rights organisation providing free legal advocacy, crisis support, and media and political campaigning for victims of injustice in Dubai and the wider UAE. While we put the finishing touches to our new site, we are also excited to be unveiling a fresh rebrand and have some exciting news about joining forces with some fantastic fellow human rights advocates, together, we will be an even more indomitable force for those who have nowhere else to turn. One thing remains constant, when individuals and families face their most desperate moments in Dubai and the wider UAE, we are there for them, free of charge.

Our team of specialist lawyers, crisis managers, media, PR and communications experts, and expert witnesses has an unrivalled track record across some of the most high-profile human rights cases in Dubai and the UAE. Whether it is a wrongful arrest, a custody dispute, cross-border litigation, an Interpol Red Notice, bringing an injustice to the United Nations, our international campaign to free Princess Latifa, our support to Princess Haya, or our work standing alongside the remarkable and courageous Zeynab Zavadli in her fight for justice for herself and her children, we have been at the forefront of it all for over a decade. This new website is long overdue.
